Winners of the Rising Tide Foundation Essay Contest

Winners of the Rising Tide Foundation Essay Contest for African Undergraduates promoted by the Nations Newspaper Nigeria.

Managed by African Liberty Organisation for Development (ALOD) and supported by Network for a Free Society.

634 entries were received from 22 countries including Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Malawi, South Africa, Ethiopia, Cameroon, Uganda, Congo, Sudan, Egypt, Mauritius, Zambia, Algeria, Morocco, Burundi, Tunisia, Gambia, Rwanda and Namibia. 548 qualified and each one was given a number so the judges had no idea who wrote them or which country they came from. Then they were sent to 4 African academics from different countries who each judged a quarter and choose their best 20 for their colleagues to judge in the second round. From the 80 essays in that round the best 25 went to 3 different African academics from three different countries for the final round.

The criteria for marking was as follows: Evidence presented, 30%, Analysis of the evidence 30% Originality 15%, Grammar and style 15%, Structure 10%

All the prizewinners scored 60% or more showing a fair or better understanding of the theme and the score for the winner was 77%. Students from Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania and Zambia made it through to the final 25 in the 3rd round and we would like to congratulate them and thank all the others who took part.

We are therefore pleased to announce the followings as the 2016 winners:

We also have 7 consolation prizes of $50 each who are included in the list below plus the 13 entrants who made it through to the final 25 in the 3rd round and therefore got an Honorable Mention.
